Agency or freelancer: which should you hire?
It's one of the first decisions in any website or app project, and there's no universal answer. This is the honest version, from an agency that tells people to hire a freelancer when that's the better call.
The trade-offs.
| Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Skills | Deep in one or two areas | Design, code and marketing together |
| Capacity | One person's hours; illness and holidays stop the work | A team that keeps going |
| Management | You coordinate if several people are involved | The agency manages the project |
| Continuity | Tied to one person's availability | Documented and supported by a team |
| Best for | Focused tasks and small sites | Business-critical projects across several skills |
The honest answer.
Hire a freelancer when the job is focused and you know exactly what you want: a small brochure site, a single integration, design tweaks, a bug. A good freelancer is fast, affordable and often excellent at their specialism.
Hire an agency when the project spans several disciplines, when your business depends on it working, or when you don't have time to be the project manager. You're paying for coordination, continuity and accountability as much as for the work.
Trellee sits in between on purpose: founder-led, so you deal with the senior person doing the work, like with a good freelancer, with specialists brought in when the project needs more hands, like an agency.
Five questions to decide.
- Does the project need more than one skill (design, code, SEO, ads)?
- Would a month of downtime or delay seriously hurt the business?
- Do you have the time and know-how to manage the work yourself?
- Will it need ongoing changes and support after launch?
- Do you need the accounts, code and documentation handed over cleanly?
The honest answers.
Up front, usually. Over the life of the project, not always: rework, coordination time and a missed launch cost money too. Get a fixed quote from each and compare the scope, not just the price.
