A small business website usually costs between $2,500 and $12,000 to have a senior team build. A landing page or small site of 1 to 5 pages runs $2,500 to $6,000, and a business website of 6 to 20 pages runs $5,000 to $12,000. Add features such as online booking, payments or a second language and the total moves up in clear steps. The sections below show what drives the number so you can tell which range you belong in.

What a website typically costs

These are typical US ranges for a senior team. A call turns a range into a fixed quote.

What you needTypical range
Landing page or small site (1 to 5 pages)$2,500 to $6,000
Business website (6 to 20 pages)$5,000 to $12,000
Online store on Shopify or WooCommerce$8,000 to $20,000
Custom or headless online store$20,000 to $45,000
Web app, client portal or custom CRM$25,000 to $70,000

If you sell products online, read how much a Shopify store costs instead, because a store is priced differently from a brochure site.

What moves the price

Page count is only part of it. Four things change a quote more than anything else.

  1. How much is custom. A site built from a clean starting layout costs less than one designed screen by screen around your brand.
  2. Features beyond pages. Each feature is scoped on its own. Typical ranges: online booking or scheduling $1,500 to $4,000, payments or deposits $1,500 to $3,500, memberships or customer accounts $2,500 to $6,000, a second language $2,000 to $5,000, and a blog or editable content hub $1,000 to $2,500.
  3. Moving an existing site. Migrating an existing site or store typically adds $1,500 to $5,000, depending on how much content, redirects and data come across.
  4. Content. Who writes the copy and supplies the photos matters. If you bring finished text and images, the build moves faster. If the agency writes and sources them, expect that time in the quote.

What the quote should include

Two quotes for the same number can cover very different work. Before you compare totals, check that each one says:

  • how many pages and which templates are included
  • who writes the copy and who supplies photos
  • whether the design is custom or starts from a pre-made layout
  • how many rounds of changes are included
  • what the site is built on, and whether you own the code and the content
  • mobile layout, basic search setup and page speed checks
  • who handles the domain, hosting and launch
  • what happens after launch: training, fixes and a support window

Costs that arrive after launch

The build price is not the whole bill. Plan for a domain name, hosting, updates for any plugins or software, and time to keep content fresh. Ask every vendor to list these in writing, with who pays whom, so nothing surprises you in month three. If you want help growing traffic after launch, our SEO and growth retainer starts from USD 600 a month, month to month.

A worked example

Say you run a plumbing company and need a home page, six service pages, a contact page and an about page. That is nine pages, so you sit in the business website range of $5,000 to $12,000. If you also want online booking, add $1,500 to $4,000 for that feature. Your realistic planning range is then $6,500 to $16,000, and the quote you get depends on how custom the design is and who writes the copy. If a vendor lands far outside that range, ask what they are including or leaving out.

When you do not need to hire anyone

You can build it yourself if you need a few pages, your budget is tight, and a standard template fits how you work. A simple site with your services, hours, a contact form and a few photos is a reasonable first project for a website builder. Hire help when the site is how customers find and book you, when you need custom features, or when a past site has slowed down, broken or lost rankings.

How to get a number for your site

  1. List the pages you need and the one action you want visitors to take, such as calling or booking.
  2. List the features beyond pages, using the ranges above.
  3. Decide who supplies the copy and the photos.
  4. Run your answers through the website cost calculator for a range and timeline in about a minute.
  5. Ask two or three vendors to quote the same scope, then compare what each one includes.

Questions

How much does a small business website cost?

A landing page or small site of 1 to 5 pages typically costs $2,500 to $6,000, and a business website of 6 to 20 pages typically costs $5,000 to $12,000. Features such as booking, payments or a second language are priced on top.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Quotes differ in scope: page count, custom design, features, who writes the content and what support follows launch. Ask each vendor to list what is included before you compare totals.

Can I build my small business website myself?

Yes, if you need a few pages and a standard template fits. Hire help when the site is your main way to win customers, when you need custom features, or when you are fixing a site that has slowed down or broken.
